Tips for Responsible Dog Ownership

Did you know that September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month? Providing your canine pal with food, shelter, and water will see to his most urgent needs, but good doggy care goes beyond these basics. A North Suffolk, VA veterinarian discusses some of the key aspects of responsible dog ownership in this article.

Veterinary Care

Be sure to stay current with your furry friend’s shots and examinations, as well as his parasite control products. Getting your pet spayed or neutered is also important, as is good doggy dental care. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule and wellness care plan.

Training

All dogs should know at least the five basic commands. These commands, which are Sit, Stay, Heel, Lay Down, and Come, are crucial, both for safety reasons and for good doggy manners. If Fido doesn’t have these basics down, it may be time for him to go back to school!

Stimulation

Make sure your canine pal has plenty of suitable toys to keep him occupied while you’re away at work. Fido is much more likely to misbehave if he is bored!

Exercise

Proper exercise is very important to your furry buddy’s health and well-being. Fido’s exercise requirements will depend on his breed, age, health, and weight, but most dogs need daily walks, at the very least. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Security

Always keep your pooch leashed when taking him off your property. If you have a yard, make sure your fence line is secure, so Fido can’t escape. You don’t want your furry pal running off!

Microchip

Microchipping is very important! That tiny little device can greatly increase your pup’s chances of coming home if he is ever lost or stolen, and can even save his life. If Fido isn’t chipped yet, we strongly urge you to see to this as soon as possible.

Comfort

Provide your furry companion with at least one good doggy bed, and make sure that he is generally comfy and cozy. When the weather is bad, keep Fido indoors, except for potty walks.

Love

Last but not least, dogs need love to truly thrive. Oblige Fido’s requests for belly rubs, play sessions, or back scratches, and remember to carve out some quality time with your furry pal.
