November is Adopt A Senior Pet Month! If you are considering getting a new pet, please consider adopting a senior dog. These sweet lovable pooches often have a very hard time finding forever homes, simply because so many people want puppies. However, older dogs really do have a lot to offer, and can make absolutely wonderful pets. Read on as a local North Suffolk, VA vet offers tips on adopting an older pooch.
Benefits of Adopting Senior Dogs
There are many things to love about dogs in their golden years. For one thing, they are absolutely adorable. Senior dogs also often have a very sweet, affectionate demeanor that is really a joy. They don’t need as much activity or entertainment as younger pups, and are much less prone to destructive behaviors, like digging and chewing. Fido will likely already be fixed, which is another plus. Last but not least, they are typically already trained.
Getting Prepared
Your shopping list will look a bit different if you are getting a senior dog than it would if you were adopting a puppy. Fido will need a comfy doggy bed. We recommend orthopedic beds, as they offer extra support. You may also want to get raised doggy dishes. Pet stairs will help your canine buddy get in and out of the car or, assuming he’s allowed, on and off the couch. Your furry friend will also need a few toys, as well as food, treats, a leash and collar or harness, a crate, and grooming supplies. If you have areas that could be dangerous, such as stairs that your pup could potentially fall down, consider getting a baby gate.
Settling In
Your canine pal will probably sleep a lot at first. A trip to the vet’s is definitely in order, but aside from that, just let your furry buddy relax and settle in. You may find that Fido wants nothing more than to doze off at your feet and collect as many belly rubs and ear scritches as possible. Enjoy this time with your cute new pet, and take a moment to pat yourself on the back. Giving an older dog is a truly wonderful act of kindness, and is definitely something that you can feel great about.
