Easter With Fido

Easter is just around the corner: it falls on the 9th this year. Many of our canine companions are absolutely delighted to say goodbye to snow and cold, and welcome the warmer weather back. (Huskies are decidedly much less enthusiastic about the matter, but that’s another topic.) Here, a Chesapeake, VA veterinarian offers some tips on celebrating the spring holiday with Fido.

Offer Safe Treats

Many holidays involve food, and lots of it. Several things that are found on many Easter menus are dangerous for your canine buddy. That list includes garlic, onions, leeks, and scallions; meat on the bone; alcohol; pitted fruits; avocado; nuts; and raw dough. Cooked bones are another concern, as they’re quite brittle and can easily break into sharp pieces. It’s also not a good idea to share things like ham, pork, or ribeye with your furry bff. These mouth-watering foods have too much fat and salt for dogs. Chocolate is another concern: it can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and seizures. In large doses, it can also be fatal. Keep those Easter eggs and bunnies out of paws’ reach!

Keep Decorations Out Of Paws’ Reach

Anything ropy or stringy can potentially choke or entangle playful pets, and can cause potentially-fatal gastrointestinal injuries if ingested.  String lights, garlands, and that fake plastic grass are all dangerous to Fido. Small and sharp items are unsafe as well. That list includes things like fake plastic eggs, candies, and, of course, your grandma’s cute bunny figurines.

Mishaps

Anytime you have a large gathering over, there’s a chance of a doggy-related mishap happening. This could be anything from Fido getting stepped on, slipping out an open door, or having his tail caught in something. Keep a close eye on your pooch! Tire your canine pal out with a fun play session before guests arrive, and give him a puzzle toy to occupy himself with.

Preparing Fido

Warm weather is coming … and so are the parasites. ! Make sure Fido is current on his vaccines and parasite control. You’ll also want to give your furry friend a good brushing, and possibly a bath, before guests arrive. (Bunny ears are optional, but if you get some, choose ones made specifically for Man’s Best Friend and don’t leave them on if your pup doesn’t like them.)
